Chinese Brand Name Strategy Helper
Foreign brands that skip a Chinese name lose customers and get the name squatted. Plan yours before entering China.
Pick a direction
- Transliteration (音译): match the sound — e.g. Nuvora → 诺维拉 / 诺维朗. Choose characters with a positive meaning.
- Semantic (意译): keep the meaning — e.g. SunBrew → 日酿 / 阳光酿. Risk: may be descriptive and weak.
- Hybrid: sound + meaning — the most memorable (e.g. Coca-Cola → 可口可乐).
Check before you settle
- Does the chosen combination sound bad in any common Chinese dialect?
- Does it mean something unintended or embarrassing?
- Is the pinyin already registered by someone else in your classes?
- Will Chinese customers pronounce and search it easily?
This lists the planning steps; a real name must be cleared against the CNIPA database and registered. Not legal advice.
